I have never regretted maintaining the discipline to wake up early and get after it, but I have regretted times that I have been lazy and did not exercise the discipline to do the little things like get up early and train." It reads "Nothing good comes from losing discipline. Reading through my journal this morning, I ran across an entry from Tuesday 5/30/17. I've never regretted exercising discipline. In its most basic form, make a commitment to do whatever it takes to achieve your objectives. The choice to overcome weakness is simple, but not easy. Often times for me, this comes in the form of doing one more rep on the pull-up bar or pushing through the final half mile of The Murph Challenge. All one has to do to increase mental toughness is make a choice to power through whatever adverse circumstances they are currently facing. The beauty here is that mental toughness is also a simple choice. It really is that simple.ĭiscipline requires mental toughness. One great characteristic about discipline is that everyone has access to it, and it's free! All it takes is making a choice. Most people know what it takes to be successful, but there are few who are disciplined enough to put in the necessary work to achieve a high level of success. Discipline is the most critical trait to reaching ultimate potential. This is true in all walks of life, whether that's professional, marriage, faith, financial health, physical fitness, etc. This is where it all starts, and out of these simple disciplines, getting up early is the foundation.ĭiscipline creates vigilance and operational readiness, which leads to success and high performance. Additionally, the smaller disciplines instill and create stronger disciplines. If I am unable to maintain discipline in these simple matters, then it will become increasingly difficult to maintain discipline in larger, more complex matters. These habits create chain reactions that filter into all aspects of life. Getting up early, physical training, making healthy food choices, even simple grooming habits like a clean shave and a pressed shirt. The title of this article "Discipline Equals Freedom" is also not new, rather I have grasped this concept through reading Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, a must read for anyone seeking growth as a leader. The concept of discipline leading to freedom is not new at all. This is currently one of favorite quotes. ![]()
